Natura is rooted in the rich agricultural heritage of the Travancore region of Kerala, long known for the farming skill of its people. In the 1960s, this expertise set off a mass migration of farmers into Kerala’s hilly regions  places like Idukki, Munnar, Adimali, Kattapana, Attappady, and Wayanad  in search of virgin, fertile land to cultivate spices, which were fetching very good prices at the time.

Among these farmers was Mr. P.C. Baby, who migrated to Attappady and began cultivating black pepper, cloves, and other spices. Cochin was  and still is  the main market for Kerala’s spices, but for Attappady, the nearest big city was Coimbatore, so it was traders from Coimbatore who came to trade in the area. These traders often did not offer farmers a fair price for their spices, a problem Mr. P.C. Baby and his fellow farmers came to recognize.

Individual farmers, with their small scale production, couldn’t economically transport their spices all the way to Cochin on their own. So, under Mr. P.C. Baby’s leadership, the farmers formed a cooperative arrangement: they pooled their spices and transported them together in a single truck to Cochin, sharing the costs and securing better prices.
